Will I lose my job? Will I survive cancer? Will my marriage last? Will my kids be okay? Will people make fun of me? Today, there are plenty of things in life that can cause us to worry. Everyone is susceptible and we all have our triggers. The result is often a mind-grinding experience that can literally run you down and wear you out. Does this happen to you? Well, I’ve got good news! Here’s the secret to a worry free life…
The Christian life is no stranger to worry, fear, anxiety, or struggle. In fact, a large part of the New Testament provides spiritual encouragement to people who were living in very difficult and challenging situations that could have easily led to worry or fear.
So let’s briefly explore a couple of these spiritual truths:
Remember God Has Your Back
Romans 8:28 – And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.
When the apostle Paul wrote to Christians in Rome, they were worried about their future. They had experienced political persecution, which excluded them from mainstream culture making it very difficult to make ends meet. The situation would have caused most of us to worry. Yet, in the midst of these unsettling times, Paul reminded them that God had a good plan for them and nothing was going to upset that plan. In other words, even though things didn’t look good, God could still turn things around for good.
This means that Christians don’t need to worry about the future because God is in control and will sovereignly work out His plan, regardless of how things look. In other words, God can turn lemons into lemonade! Now, this doesn’t mean all things are good, because they aren’t. There are plenty of bad things out there in life. This simply means that God can bring good out of a bad situation and promises to do so for “those who are called according to his purpose” (i.e. Christians).
The challenging part with this truth is the timing piece. Hindsight is easy, but when you are in the thick of it, it is really hard to “know” God has your back. This is why the next step is really important…
Turn Every Care Into Prayer
Philippians 4:6-7 – … do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
The biblical encouragement here is to take every anxious or worrisome thought and pray about it. In other words, instead of being a mind grinder, become a prayer warrior. Why? Because when we worry, we are essentially in a mental stall. Think about it, if you could have figured it out, you wouldn’t be worrying about it. But the fact that there is no resolve and the future isn’t clear, you start to worry.
So mind grinding won’t do you any good but when you turn every care into prayer, you are now engaging God in your mental process. The great news is He promises to show up and provide you with supernatural peace even if your situation doesn’t change. That’s a great deal! No more worry! So the next time you start to worry, start to pray, God promises it will pay off (see my blog post, “2 reasons Why Prayer is a Waste of Time”).
One last word of encouragement: Biblically managing your worry will take some practice and won’t happen overnight. But don’t worry about it! Remember God has your back and He wants you to turn every care into prayer. The rest is up to Him and He can turn lemons into lemonade.
Note: I recognize that there can be clinical levels of worry and anxiety (i.e. GAD), that will require a doctor’s attention. This blog is intended for Christians who struggle with non-clinical levels of worry.
