In just a few days, when the clock strikes midnight, people will be shouting “Happy New Year!”. They will be hugging, toasting, and celebrating the potential that 2016 will bring prosperity and happiness. But how can we be sure? Is this just wishful thinking or is there something we can do to actually make it happy? Good News! You can make 2016 “Happy” and here’s how…
#1 – Live One Day At a Time
Time is an illusive topic because it just keeps moving and doesn’t wait for anyone. You can’t go back in time, nor can you move forward. All you can do is live in the present. It’s important to note that God created time when He created mankind (Genesis 1:1-5). This means that God thought the 24-hour day was the appropriate amount of time for us to work, relax, and sleep in a healthy and happy way. This is why the Psalmist sings…
Psalm 118:24 – This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.
In other words, every new day of life is a gift from God and He wants us to be happy in it. When you stop and think about a year, it is essentially 365 individual day increments. This means that a happy new year is really taking place one day at a time. Or to put it another way, a happy new “year” is accomplished by having a happy new “day”. Remember you can’t live in the past or the future, but only the present day that the Lord has made! Once you reduce your annual focus to a daily focus, you are well on your way to a happy new year.
#2 – Reflect On Your Blessings Today
1 Timothy 6:6-8 – But godliness with contentment is great gain, for we brought nothing into the world, and we cannot take anything out of the world. But if we have food and clothing, with these we will be content.
So much of our unhappiness is rooted in being discontent. When we forget about all that we have and focus on what we don’t have, life becomes a pity party. The last I checked a pity party has no balloons, streamers, or laughter. In fact, it is a miserable party that no one wants to be around or a part of. But if we ponder and reflect on what we do have, that’s when the real party starts.
To be grateful to God for another day of life, the food you eat, the clothes you wear, the place you live, etc. is where true happiness is found.
This isn’t simply about positive thinking, but about reality thinking and taking the time to reflect on how you have been blessed today. We all have a lot and it’s important to reflect on that everyday.
So there it is, the secret to a happy new year. It’s all about stepping into the truth of God’s word one day at a time and living out your Faith in the Real World!
