It’s big news! The Ashley Madison website that promotes extra-marital affairs has been hacked and the personal information for its 35 million customers is being publically released. Lawsuits are being filed. Divorce lawyers are getting busy. But there is more to the story than what the headlines are telling you…
Although, the Ashley Madison scandal makes for great headline news, it’s an old story. The sin of adultery has been taking place for millennia and even made God’s top ten list of “no-nos”(Exodus 20:14). But the real story behind Ashley Madison is rarely talked about, so here goes…
Sin Never Pays Off
Romans 6:23 – For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
One of the greatest deceptions that takes place when it comes to sin is that “you can handle it” and “things will be okay”. Anytime you are tempted to sin, it will always try to dupe you into believing there will be minimal accountability or consequences. This is a lie! Sin will always has negative consequences and promises to destroy anyone in its path. Think of all the marriages that will be destroyed as a result of the Ashley Madison situation. Think of all the relational death that will take place between spouses and their families. Yet, every one of Ashley Madison’s clients figured they were “just having a little fun” or “not hurting anyone”.
This is how sin works! It never pays off! So the real story behind the Ashley Madison scandal isn’t that lives are being destroyed, it’s the fact that 35 million people thought everything would be okay. Sin is never okay and will never reap positive benefits in life. God’s word is true and sin will always lead to relational, emotional, physical, or spiritual death and destruction. That is why God wants us to obey and follow Him first!
Sin Appeals to Your God-Given Desires
Gen 2:24 – Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.
Sex is an amazing gift that was created by God for husbands and wives to enjoy. This means that sex is a God-given desire and not something that is sinful or wrong. The thing that makes sex wrong is context (see my blog Great Sex). When sex is taken out of the context of marriage, it becomes sinful and destructive. Welcome to Ashley Madison!
But in order for the sin of adultery to be tempting, it will first appeal to a God-given desire for sex. This is true for any temptation to sin. God created people with a desire to be happy, to be loved, or to be successful. There is nothing wrong with wanting those things in life. The reason sin is so tempting is it appeals to fulfilling these godly desires in ungodly ways. The real story behind the Ashley Madison scandal is that 35 million people were responding to their God-given desire for sex, happiness, or love in the wrong way. Once again, this is why it’s important to know and obey God’s word in order to avoid being trapped and experience sin’s harmful consequences!
I’m sure we are not done hearing about the Ashley Madison scandal. The media will continue to talk about this story as more and more names are released and lives are exposed. But God’s word gives us some insight on the real story that is taking place and lessons we should all take to heart!
