How often do you talk about Jesus to non-Christians? How easy it is for you to mention the Lord to your family, friends, neighbors, or co-workers? Are you freaked out? Survey says, less that 5% of Christians actually share their faith with others!
When Jesus encouraged Christians to be His witnesses and to share the Gospel, He equated it to shining a light in a dark world. Matthew 5:16 – Let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.
Most Christians today experience a sense of fear when it comes to sharing their faith and being a shining witness for Jesus. As a result, very few ever do it. Why?
Can you think of anything more important than the message of God’s love and forgiveness? Can you think of anything more important than eternity, heaven, or hell? Then why don’t we talk about it? Why are we freaked out? Could it be that we are trying to shine in a way that isn’t God’s way?
Let’s look at 3 ways to brighten your light for Jesus.
1. Make it a Lifestyle
Matthew 28:19 – Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit
The Great Commission commands all Christians to duplicate themselves, making more and more disciples of Jesus throughout the world. The Greek word for “go” is an aorist passive participle, which literally means “having gone”. In other words, evangelism is a lifestyle, not an event.
“Having gone” to work, to school, to play, etc., make disciples. This is all about looking for opportunities to shine for Jesus throughout your day. This isn’t about a rehearsed speech to specific people in a specific location, it is organic, unplanned, and will sound different every time. The more you talk about Jesus and what He has done for you throughout the day, the more natural and effective you will be.
God wants you to shine brightly all day long and not only at specific times.
2. Remember Actions Speak Louder Than Words
1 John 3:10 – This is how we know who the children of God are and who the children of the devil are: Anyone who does not do what is right is not a child of God.
When it comes to shining your light for Jesus, it’s not just what you say but also what you do. When our life doesn’t match our message, the light switch is off! The world will immediately recognize a hypocrite who isn’t living out the truth they are proclaiming. People will notice your decisions, your convictions, how you respond, what you do and don’t do, and the way you treat others.
It is not uncommon to hear someone talk about becoming a Christian because of someone’s life reflecting the love of Jesus. So remember people will listen in two ways, by what you say and by what you do. It is all about a consistent message and a consistent life.
3. Don’t Let Rejection Freak You Out
1 Corinthians 1:18 – For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.
It is important to remember that not everyone will respond in a positive way to Jesus. This is just part of the process and something we need to get used to. Even Jesus wasn’t always liked or accepted, so why should you be any different? This is all about having realistic expectations when you talk about the Lord and knowing some will say yes and some will say no.
The sooner you get used to this truth, the less freaked out you will be. Also, remember that a “no” now could be a “yes” later. You never know how God is working behind the scenes.
There you have it, 3 simple principles to help reduce the anxiety and shine brighter for Jesus. Flip on your switch today!
