No joke! It really happened! I had an encounter with an angel.
I know it sounds crazy and you gotta know that I’m not that guy who looks for God behind every corner. In fact, I didn’t realize I had met an angel until later. But through it all, I learned a couple things that you might find helpful if you ever have the same experience:
1. Angels Are Sent To Do God’s Will
Hebrews 1:14 – Are not all angels ministering spirits sent to serve those who will inherit salvation?
My encounter took place in Paris when I was on tour with Idle Cure, a Christian rock band back in the 80’s.
We needed to board a train to Frankfurt, Germany to play a concert that evening. We couldn’t get tickets. The line was long and we didn’t have time to wait. We asked for help, asked to cut in line, no one helped or cared. There was huge pressure because if we missed the train, we missed our concert, creating a financial nightmare for the promoter, fans, tickets, refunds, etc.
With only 20 minutes left before the last train to Frankfurt departed, we decided to get all the band members and road crew together in a huddle and pray. There were eight of us asking God to perform a miracle. “Lord, please get us on this train!”
When we were finished praying, I looked up and saw a man standing about 30 feet away trying to make eye contact with me. I looked at him and he looked at me, so I walked over to him while the others were talking. He was a French guy with broken English and asked if I needed help. I said, thanks anyway but we just need train tickets to Germany.
He asked, “How many?” I said, “Eight”. He reached into his pocket and pulled out exactly 8 train tickets! He not only had exactly 8 tickets (no more or less), they were tickets to Frankfurt. I couldn’t believe it!
“How much do you want?” (At this point, I would have paid double.) He said, “Don’t worry about it, just take them.”
Are you kidding me? Who does that? Who gives a complete stranger in a train station $300+ worth of train tickets? An angel sent to do God’s will?
2. Angels Will Surprise You
Hebrews 13:2 – Do not forget to entertain strangers, for by so doing some people have entertained angels without knowing it.
I was so excited. I ran back to the group and told them we’ve got tickets! Everyone was blown away. “It’s a miracle! God answers prayer!” Everyone wanted to know where I got the tickets. So I told them it was a French guy and he gave them to me for free.
I turned around to point to the man… but he was gone.
I don’t mean gone as in walked away, I mean gone like disappeared. This was a wide-open area in a train station and if he had just walked away I could have easily spotted him.
When I didn’t see him, I got chills down my back because I knew I had just encountered something supernatural. Later I came to realize, after studying the Bible, that I had encountered an angel. This was the only way I could explain this “stranger” and all that took place. It was way beyond coincidence.
Now, you may challenge me on this, but if there was ever a Hebrew 13:2 moment it had to be this one! I don’t know how else you could explain it. Since then, I don’t believe I have had another angel encounter, but then again they will surprise you.
So keep your head up and your heart open, you never know when you will meet and encounter one of God’s messengers… an angel.
