Last Friday, the world watched a peaceful transfer of power take place at the presidential inauguration. It was a very public event and regardless of your political view, you know there is now a new president. But do you know about a spiritual inauguration and transfer of power that is also taking place?
As I watched the presidential inauguration, I was reminded of the transfer of power that takes place within the heart and mind of a person who becomes a Christian. Scripture says that when someone trusts Christ as their Lord and Savior, God’s Spirit will indwell them and there will be a change. No longer will sinful nature be in charge, but there will be a transfer of power to God’s Holy Spirit.
2 Corinthians 5:17 – … if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.
This spiritual inauguration takes place immediately upon a profession of faith. Jesus referred to this event as being born again and critical in order to inherit eternal life. (John 3:3) The apostle Paul warned professing Christians to examine themselves to make sure this transfer of power has actually taken place.
2 Corinthians 13:5 – Examine yourselves, to see whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves. Or do you not realize this about yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you?—unless indeed you fail to meet the test!
In other words, if a person has not personally experienced a spiritual inauguration by God’s spirit, that person may not even be a Christian. Therefore, it behooves everyone to self-examine. It’s important to be able to affirm the following questions: Are you born again by the spirit of God? Has God changed your life? Have your values, motives, and perspectives changed? Do you experience conviction of sin? Do you have a hunger for God’s word? Honestly answering these questions will reveal if there has truly been a spiritual inauguration in your life. If you have doubts, don’t delay, give your life to Jesus (see my blog post, Hell No). If you are confident, praise the Lord for His work in your life!
Even though a presidential inauguration is always an exciting time in America’s history, it pales in comparison to the excitement that takes place in the life of a new believer when a spiritual inauguration takes place. That’s Faith in the Real World!
