Voodoo Christianity is an epidemic in America! It is creeping into the church!
Are you a Voodoo Christian? How can you tell?
If you travel overseas to places like Cuba or India, it is not uncommon to find idol worshippers or witch doctors including Jesus in their religious practices. They are essentially practicing Voodoo Christianity. Missionaries call this “syncretism”. It’s a huge challenge, especially when it comes to people becoming Christians! Is Jesus really their Lord or did they simply add Jesus to their list of gods and idols? Only time will tell. Jesus clearly prohibits this.
John 14:6 – “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
Today, we see Voodoo Christianity (syncretism) taking place right here in our own backyard. America is filled with its share of idols to pick from. They’re all competing for our devotion and worship. It can be subtle and dangerous and we may not even know it’s happening.
Here are 3 ways to protect against Voodoo Christianity:
1. Identify the 2nd Place Contender (Matthew 6:24)
Most all of us would say, “Jesus is number one!” But what we say and what is true may be two different things. Jesus warned that we will all battle against competing idols and we have to make a choice.
Matthew 6:24 – “No one can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other.”
So where is your place of risk? What follows as a close second to Jesus in your life? In other words, if you weren’t a Christian, what would be your number one priority (e.g., money, power, fame, cars, kids, etc)? The 2nd place contender will usually be the problem trying to fight for the #1 slot. The sooner you recognize it, the sooner you will be able to protect against it.
2. Monitor Who’s Winning (James 2:17)
What happens when the 2nd place contender is challenged by God’s Word? Who wins? Jesus challenged a rich ruler in Luke 18:18 and he failed the test, exposing God was not his priority even though he stated otherwise. The true test is what you do, not what you say.
James 1:27 – Faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead. Monitoring if you obey God more than preserve the 2nd place contender will reveal the true Lord in your life and alert you to any drifting that is taking place.
3. Practice Letting Go (1 Timothy 6:17-19)
The only way to truly know if you are caught in Voodoo Christianity is being able to let go of any potential idols. The Bible addresses this in 1 Timothy 6:17-19 when rich people were warned against the idol of money and commanded to, “do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share.” Being generous required letting it go!
The more we practice letting go of the 2nd place contender or any potential idol, the more we protect against Voodoo Christianity. When we let go we prove who has a hold on whom. This may require letting go of money, a relationship, a job promotion, or even a child.
Of course, letting go of an idol means we are holding onto Jesus… keeping Him #1!
Be careful, Voodoo Christianity is alive and well right here in America!
