The shroud of Turin, the wall of an Egyptian tomb, or Colton Burpo’ s near death experience, all claim to provide images that reveal what Jesus looked like. Many have debated whether these claims are true or not, but few have offered alternative options.
What did Jesus look like? How would this 30-year old Nazarene have been described? For thousands of years, people have made attempts and you can Google all the options, but if you really want to know, look no further. Check it out!
1 John 4:10-12 – This is love: not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and his love is made complete in us.
There it is, two words that describe Jesus! Two words that tell us what he looked like. Jesus Christ, the Son of God, God incarnate is described as being loving and sacrificial. These are two of the most powerful and precise descriptions that can be used to describe someone today.
Usually, when we describe people, we start on a superficial level and say they are tall, short, blond, or brunette. But then to provide a better description, we take it a level deeper and describe them as strong, weak, smart or talented. But to be even more precise, we include a description of their personality or character (e.g. nice, caring, aggressive, or mean).
The Bible makes it very clear that the superficial description of Jesus doesn’t matter. Nowhere in scripture are we told Jesus was short, tall, blonde or brunette because it doesn’t matter. The only description provided is the one that goes a level deeper and is more precise:
Jesus is sacrificial and loving
All of Christianity rests on these two descriptions. All of Christianity celebrates these two descriptions. This revealed image of Jesus is what makes this Easter week so significant. We celebrate His love and sacrifice for our sins, so we can be forgiven by God and have victory over death, looking forward to the promise of heaven and deliverance from hell (see my blog post, Hell No).
Although it may be intriguing to wonder if Jesus was short with brown eyes or tall with green eyes, that will all be forgotten when you encounter Him as your Lord and Savior. You will experience His love and sacrifice in such significant ways that the other stuff won’t matter. In fact, it will be so powerful that others will actually see Jesus in you! So as you try to imagine what Jesus might have looked like, guess no more. It’s all about love and sacrifice and this is the image He wants to be revealed!
